How it works: every MOT test records the odometer. Line up all of a car's readings in date order and clocking has nowhere to hide: mileage that falls, or leaps implausibly between tests, is a flag. Motorworthy runs this check on every car automatically.
Why it matters
A clocked car isn't just dishonestly priced. Its service schedule is wrong, its wear parts are older than they look, and its history is a lie. Our own analysis of every MOT since 2022 found 309,883 vehicles on UK roads with mileage histories that don't add up: roughly one in every 112 cars with enough history to check. The odometer sequence is the single cheapest way to catch it, and it's free.
What we flag
Mileage falls between tests✕ flagged
Implausible jump for the gap✕ flagged
Steady, consistent readings✓ verified
Only one reading on recordinsufficient data, we say so
A flag isn't a conviction: data-entry errors happen. It means ask hard questions and check the paper history before buying.
